Questions and answers

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most. If yours is not here, write to us.

Who we work with

Who hires you?

Mostly NGOs and development organisations that fund storage for farming communities, companies and agribusinesses that want reliable supply from the farmers they work with, and a few large farms and cooperatives. They give us the contract, and we deliver the build.

Do you work directly with small farmers?

Rarely, because a cold room is expensive and most small farmers cannot fund one on their own. Usually an NGO or a company hires us, and the farmers use what we build. If you are a farmer or a farmers\x27 group, introduce us to the organisation that supports you, or write to us.

How are the costs covered if the farmers cannot pay?

It depends on the client. An NGO may fund the project as a grant. A company may agree with the farmers that it will recover the cost as a small share of their sales over time. Either way, our contract is with the organisation that hires us, and we set out the price clearly before anything is built.

Services

What does a project with you usually involve?

It starts with a conversation with the client about the farms we are building for: what is grown, how much, and where it needs to go. We then plan the facility, bring in the contractors and specialists needed to build it, coordinate delivery, and hand over with procedures and training.

Not every project needs every step. Some clients only need a plan and a scope.

Do you build the facilities yourselves?

No. We plan and coordinate. Construction, refrigeration, solar and civil work are carried out by qualified contractors and specialists, and we manage the work between them. We are clear with you from the start about who is doing what.

Can you help with solar-powered cold storage?

Yes. Where the site and the load suit it, we plan solar-powered cold storage and bring in refrigeration and solar specialists. Whether solar is the right choice depends on the crop, the volumes, the site and the existing power supply, and we will set out the options plainly.

Project scope

What information should I bring to a first conversation?

Whatever you have. It helps to know the crop or crops, rough volumes and harvest months, where the site is and what power and road access it has, and what is going wrong today. A rough budget range and timing are useful too.

If you do not know some of this yet, that is fine; working it out is part of the job.

How large are the projects you take on?

They range from a cooperative's first collection point to commercial packhouses. We are a small team, so we choose work carefully, and we will tell you if a project is a poor fit for us.

International work

Can you work outside the United States?

Yes. We are based in the United States and have coordinated projects in Mexico, Asia, Europe and Africa as well as in the US, usually with local contractors and partners. Whether we can take a project on depends on the site, the timing and the partners available.

Do you work with local contractors?

Wherever we can. Local contractors know the site, the suppliers and the regulations, and they are there after we leave. We bring specialists in where the job needs skills that are not available locally.

Training

Do you provide training for the people who will run a facility?

Yes. Training and handover are part of how we work. We help plan how the facility will be run, write procedures, and train the operating team so that they can run and maintain it.

Will you write the operating procedures?

Yes, where the project includes handover. Procedures are written for your crops and your facility, in plain language, and are reviewed with the people who will use them.

Cold-storage coordination

How do you decide what size of cold room I need?

We start from your crop, volumes, harvest timing and how quickly produce needs to be cooled, then compare options against the site and the budget. We would rather size it to what you handle than to a catalogue.

Does a cold room need a grid connection?

Not always. It depends on the load, the site and how reliable the supply is. We look at grid, generator and solar options together and explain the trade-offs.

Discussing a project

Do you guarantee sales or outcomes?

No. We plan and coordinate, and we make introductions to potential buyers or distribution partners, but we do not guarantee sales, contracts, or particular results. Outcomes depend on many factors, including the crop, the market and how a facility is run.

What happens after I send a message?

Your message is saved and read by our team. We reply by email within two business days, usually to ask a few questions or to suggest a call. Sending a message does not commit you to anything.
